Just before the FIFA World Cup in 2010, the Gautrain opened with great fanfare. In a city struggling with congestion and a lack of reliable public transport, it was billed as a world class solution that would change commuters’ lives. And it's made good on some of that vision. Today, the train is reliable, clean and safe. But it’s under-delivered on its promise. But that hasn’t stopped Gauteng’s provincial government from pushing a multibillion-rand expansion of the service. The proposed routes run right through residential neighbourhoods - where homeowners say they’re in the dark about how badly their homes and lives will be affected.
